Speedy 'Cuda' To Spin Wheels In Drag Battle
Memphian Bill Taylor has entered his supercharged Plymouth Barracuda in
Sunday's King of Sixteens drag race at Lakeland Drag Strip.
Larry Arnold of Detroit will drive Taylor's 1500 horsepower racer against
the nation's finest drag racers. Arnold replaces Larry Reyes who recently
left for California to race his own car.
Arnold has had only three weeks practice, but has recorded a run of 191
miles per hour at Englishtown, N.J., in a winning effort two weeks ago.
The 'Super Cuda' is the only car in the nation to hold a winning edge over
meet favorite, Don 'Dyno' Nicholson.
Another Memphis entry is Larry Coleman's For Torino. Sydney Foster, who will
drive the car, won the American Hot Rod Association's Grand National
Championships last month at Bristol, Tenn.
The 'Super Ford' is powered by Fomoco's exotic overhead cam 428 engine and
has recorded a best speed of 189.86.
Lakeland is expecting a record crowd of 12,000 for the 2 p.m. racing show.
The gates will open at 8 a.m. Lakeland is located off the Canada exit on
Interstate 40.
